On this day (I see clearly), American rock band Alter Bridge released their debut album One Day Remains in 2004. The band is made up of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Myles Kennedy, lead guitarist and backing vocals Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips.
One Day Remains is a post-grunge/ alternative metal album with 11 tracks in total. Although all members participated in the songwriting, Tremonti wrote most of them. Before you dismiss Alter Bridge sounding exactly like Creed (Tremonti, Marshall and Phillips' old band), you should definitely hear this album.
The first track on the album is 'Find The Real', which starts out with a heavy guitar riff. The drums and bass sound great, and so does the vocals. This song is a great way to open the album. 'One Day Remains' is the title track and also the single of this album. The band keeps on going strong as they produce yet another fantastic song to introduce the band and who they can be. Tremonti does a fantastic solo, and the drums at the beginning of the song are hard to dismiss.
'Open Your Eyes' sounds mediocre as compared to the rest, but it is still nice listen. It may not be Alter Bridge's best song, but you can't blame them. Not every single track in an album is perfect. 'Burn It Down' feels like an intense song, but it's actually pretty slow-paced. However, this song gives you the chills. Kennedy's vocals are amazing in this one as he sings the high notes.
'Metalingus' was never meant to be a single, but this song has been Alter Bridge's greatest success. Everything on this track is just perfect, which led to WWE Hall of Famer Edge using this song as his entrance music (the best decision he ever made). Kennedy's vocals reach one of the highest notes as he sings the lyrics 'Could you set me free'. This song instantly captures your attention with its fast-paced start. There's never a dull moment in this song, and if you don't headbang to this, you're definitely missing out. Even if you don't like to listen to the other songs in this album (how could you?), this is the one song that you HAVE to listen to. It's also the kind of song that you can never skip on your playlist. One word to describe this: Perfection.
After the intense song 'Metalingus', 'Broken Wings' is a chill song, allowing you to take a breather. There's nothing special about this song as it is very similar throughout. Nonetheless, it is a good song. 'In Loving Memory' is a touching song which is a tribute to Tremonti's late mother. It's definitely not something to be rocking out to, but it's a great track. With its tender lyrics, you might shed a tear listening to this song. 'Down To My Last' is amazing as Kennedy's vocals hit fantastic high notes. It sounds even better knowing that Kennedy wrote the lyrics for this song and puts his emotions into it. There's also a great solo.
'Watch Your Words' is probably the heaviest song on this album. This song borrows a Metallica-like sound. The guitar is the first thing that will capture your attention. Then, Kennedy's vocals put everything into place. 'Shed My Skin' starts out slow but progresses faster in the chorus. Kennedy's vocals killed it, especially nearing the end of the track.
'The End Is Here' is another great song and definitely a fantastic end to the album. The guitar riff instantly hooks you.
Maybe what the ex-Creed members need is just a fresh outlook — Myles Kennedy. Kennedy's vocals are hard to ignore. He hits amazing high and low notes, and has a great falsetto. Kennedy is no doubt one of the greatest singers in rock music right now. Tremonti's skills are not to be overlooked either as he plays amazing solos and riffs. Marshall's bass is sometimes not heard, but the bass sounds great nonetheless. Phillip's drumming skills have definitely improved, evident in songs like Metalingus. Overall, this album proved that Alter Bridge is something new and definitely worth listening.
